‘Guinness Book of World Records’ Holder Carla Perrotti, Announces Plan to Walk the Libyan Desert for Peace in Africa
March 31, 2008. Tunis, Tunisia
In an exclusive press briefing for journalists attending the African International Media Summit (AIMS 2008) in Tunis, world renowned Italian desert explorer Carla Perrotti, announced her plan to walk solo across 250 kilometers of the Libyan Desert, and that she was doing so in the name of peace in Africa.
Over a period of 20 years, Ms. Perrotti has gone where few humans have gone before: into some of the world’s most foreboding desert wastelands … alone. “I’m looking forward to experiencing the peace and beauty of the Libyan Desert,” said Ms. Perrotti in at the press briefing at the Abou Nawas Hotel in Tunis. “The desert is a very emotional place for me. Now, as an Italian woman who loves Africa, I am proud to dedicate this experience to the cause of peace in Africa. People often tell me what I do is incredible, walking alone across the great deserts. But I think everyday people in Africa face more difficult challenges just to survive from one day to the next”.
Nadia Murabet, a Libyan and President of Vision Media, which organizes international cultural events and festivals, is spearheading the effort behind Ms. Perrotti’s walk across the Libyan desert. Ms. Murabet also received the AIMS 2008 “ACHEIVERS AWARD” for her distinguished work building bridges of peace and understanding between Africa and Europe through culture and media.
“Carla has left her dynamic footprint in many of the world’s deserts,” said Ms. Murabet. “She’s walked the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the Simpson Desert in Australia, the Tenere Desert in Niger and the snake-infested Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. And the Guinness Book of World Records recognizes her as the first human being to walk across the Taklamakan Desert
Beginning April 20, Ms. Perrotti will face her Libyan Desert challenge.
“The desert,” she told reporters, “is beautiful, but it can also be very hard. Sometimes I suffer from the extremes of heat and cold and there is always the concern about water. But I believe the cause of peace will be a wind at my back to give me the energy to make it through,” Ms. Perrotti said. “I would like this challenge to serve as an example of what one person can do to advance the cause of peace.”
Carla Perrotti is the author of two books, Deserti (Corbaccio 1998) and Silenzi di sabbia (Corbaccio 2005) and supports Doctors del Mondo (Doctors for the World) for whom her husband serves a volunteer physician.
Vision Media’s Nadia Murabet sees Carla’s Libyan Desert Walk as a wonderful way to promote the concept of peace in Africa. “Vision Media links with charitable foundations and cultural organizations throughout Europe, Africa and the Arab World. We believe we have a responsibility to promote people like Carla and present programs and projects that support and sustain cultural development, economic stability and peace in Africa by producing high-quality programs and productions that bring people together through culture, sports and media.”
Recently appointed vice-president and global ambassador of the NewSporAfrica International Foundation based in Geneva, Ms. Murabet said the foundation uses sports and art as instruments to advance the cause of peace. “We’re also interested in providing training facilities and support to athletes participating in the FIFA Africa’s Cup Games in 2010, and we’ve just launched a global campaign to encourage the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring a future Olympic Games to Africa. Many of history’s great Olympic athletes have come from Africa and the African Diaspora, but no Olympic Games have ever been held in Africa.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. SELECTED AS OFFICIAL SITE OF THE ETHIOPIAN/AFRICAN 2000 MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION

Washington, DC
AddisZemen, LLC has selected Washington, DC as the site for the ETHIOPIAN/AFRICAN 2000 MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION, an historic affair which quite literally, can only occur “once in a thousand years”! Ethiopia measures the passage of time using a combination of the ancient Egyptian and Julian calendars and according to that system, the Ethiopian ‘millennium’ will commence this year on September 12, 2007. For those nations using the Gregorian calendar, mostly nations of the West, the millennium commenced on the 1st of January, 2000. This wonderful celebration of Ethiopian and African culture and history falls on September 11th, the Ethiopian New Year’s Eve. Ironically, this is also the anniversary of the greatest terror attack on America in its history.

“We see some important, reverse symbolism and an opportunity for global healing in this,” said Anteneh Demelash, spokesperson for AddisZemen, LLC. “September 11th has the sad, sad distinction of being a profoundly tragic day for America- as well as for those many nations who count themselves friends of America. But we’re going to use this day as a lens to focus on and promote the living spirit of positive transformation in humanity, with the goal being to create a thousand years of peace and social evolution, starting with Africa and the Middle East.”
The ETHIOPIAN/AFRICAN 2000 MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION will be presented by the Ethiopian/African 2000 Millennium Group, on the Constitution Avenue side of the Washington Monument grounds, adjacent to the site where the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of African American History will be built. This day-long event, scheduled from 5:00 pm to midnight, will feature music, a satellite feed joining Washington, DC to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Abidjan, Senegal; celebrity appearances, vendors from Africa and the African Diaspora, wonderful cuisines and cultural expressions from all over Africa and the Diaspora and a fireworks display. AddisZemen, LLC is the principal sponsor of this ”once-in-a-thousand-years” celebration of the human spirit. AddisZemen is joined in this effort by many national advertisers and international sponsors.

Advance details about special guest appearances and the program format will follow in a future announcement. For more information about the ETHIOPIAN/AFRICAN 2000 MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION, contact Mr. Tony Regusters of Division Twelve Media at: tonyregusters@division-twelve.com, or by phone at: (202) 587-5648.

THE MIRACLE AFRICA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION PRESENTS A GALA FUNDRAISING EVENT AT THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

As the Riviera rolls out the red carpet to welcome the world’s film industry to the Cannes Film Festival, that palm-tree lined city will also be the setting for a star-studded special event focusing on the burgeoning problem of malaria in Africa. On the evening of May 23rd, 2008, onboard the mega-yacht Turama, luminaries from Hollywood and motion picture stars from all over the world will attend a gala fundraising event introducing the MIRACLE AFRICA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION.
“The MIRACLE AFRICA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION’s mission is one that focuses on healthcare-related support for the people of Africa, and our first order of business is to launch a major campaign to tackle head-on the deadly scourge of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa,” said Nadia Murabet, the foundation’s executive director. “The MIRACLE AFRICA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION is presenting this special, star-studded event onboard the luxurious Turama, to issue a 21st century call-to-arms about the re-emergence of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, where it kills 3000 children a day,” said Ms. Murabet.

Malaria is transmitted by a parasite introduced to the human body by what may be the deadliest and most efficient malaria-bearing mosquito in the world: the female Anophelese gambiae mosquito.
“Malaria is coming back strong in Africa, and also re-emerging as a healthcare issue in the industrialized world. But it is in sub-Saharan Africa where this disease has most successfully re-asserted itself, even trumping HIV/AIDS as a cause of death…” said Dr. Erieka Bennett of the Diaspora Africa Forum in Accra, Ghana. “Malaria is also responsible for more than 40% of sub-Saharan Africa’s healthcare expenditures, and with increased air travel to and from Africa malaria is re-emerging in the industrialized nations.”
For more information about the MIRACLE AFRICA INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION, contact Tony Regusters of Division 12 Media at + (202) 587-5648, or via email at: tonyregusters@division-twelve.com.

The program focused on a USA visit by six extraordinary young people from rural Ghana, and featured excerpts from TV media coverage, a mini-documentary videotaped by Division 12, and an audio link to a teen radio program Division 12 had the young people booked on as guests. The project was a huge and tremendous success and garnered extraodinary media coverage for Plan Ghana and Plan USA and the ‘Youth Ambassadors’ program.
